Coach George Smith was a math teacher and the athletic director at my high school. He was a father figure to everyone, even the kids who had a dad. He had such a strong persona and his sole focus was the welfare of the students. He was concerned about how you were doing in class and how you were doing in your sport. If he saw you screwing around after school, he’d be on you whether you were an athlete or not. He wanted all of us to go to college and was emphatic about our moving on and doing something with our lives. Every kid at that school knew Coach Smith, and in my opinion, every school needs a Coach Smith.
